Sewing that's Retro, Geek, and Chic
Remember that mechanical bull job I mentioned a while back? The one I was called to sew a pleather cover for, because they wanted it too look like a blinged out Chanel purse? Well, the promos for “Big Rich Texas” Season 3 have aired now, so now I can safely post a photo. =)
Mechanical Bull, Chanel Purse style.
I didn’t attach any of the trim – the guy who called me for the job got the fun task of adding the bling to the cover.
It was a simple job – I just made a cover that fit the bull and covered the brown & white fur on its head & body. The only complicated part was the fact that it was made of pleather and I didn’t have a Teflon presser foot at the time, so I had to use strips of tissue paper between the fabric and the presser foot. (The tissue paper keeps pleather or vinyl from sticking to the foot as you sew and can be easily ripped away from the stitching afterwards.)
I found a video featuring the bull (he even has a twitter handle!). I’m pretty sure this show would drive me crazy if I watched it – it just perpetuates the stereotype that all the women in Texas have big hair, are over-the-top, and love money & bling. *gag*
Anyway, the little promo isn’t too awful to watch even with sound on, and if you like cat-fights & reality TV, you might enjoy the show.
And I finally remembered to buy a Teflon presser foot right after this job (I’ve been meaning to buy one for years), so I’m ready for my next bizarre sewing project!
Well at least the bull looked classy 😉
hehe – I guess that’s a good way to look at it. =)
The bull looks classy! What a weird job. Cool weird, of course. It’s the sort of thing my life in theater provided me… dozens of strange stories. Awesome job!
Thanks! Yeah, the strangeness of the requests always make for a good story. =)
I can only imagine the conversations the guy who called me had when he first tried to hire a seamstress from a standard tailor shop (he was from out of town and didn’t know any costumers to call at first). He said they were the most confused about bringing a machine to the job.
haha. Yeah, I bet they were like, “and who will be wearing the Chanel jacket?…a what?” Followed by “I think you got the wrong number.” ahhaa
I think now I may have seen it all… Personally, I’d just go for a Chanel purse over a “bull cover”, but the story wouldn’t be nearly as interesting!
lol – yes, it is so hard to explain what I do when people ask!
That show looks VERY STUPID. But, at least your work got a lot of up-close shots in the promo!
Well, it is a “reality” show, and we all know how real those actually are. Yes, I was glad to see it got some decent camera time!
Wow. Just wow. Shows like that make me just shake my head, but at least your bull is all decked out! Great job making him look classy!
Yeah, reality shows aren’t really my thing either. I like a few of the more competition type or research type but the others are rather pointless dramas.
The bull cover wasn’t really my design (I just made it fit well) but it was fun to see it turn out so well and know that my fingerprints are all over it, hehe. =)
