Sewing that's Retro, Geek, and Chic
Back in November of 2011, I received an email from sewing author & blogger Christelle Beneytout asking for permission to feature my sewing room in a book about sewing spaces and organization. I was beyond thrilled that anyone would think my sewing space & ideas were worthy of publication!
After many emails back & forth, I was able to get some decent high resolution photos of my sewing room to her (she even wanted one of me, hence the post title), and I eagerly awaited the news that her book was finished.
Well, yesterday, I opened the front door to find that a package had been delivered containing her book… and she sent me an extra copy!
Therefore, I’ve decided to share – by hosting my first giveaway!
Fair warning about this giveaway: the book isn’t in English (and I’m not sure if there are plans for a published translation), so you won’t actually be able to read it unless you can read French. But there are plenty of wonderful photos, and you can always use Google Translate for the parts you really want to understand (that’s how I’ve been “reading” it).
The book’s title translates to

I’d like to be in the giveaway. I found your blog via Cation Designs. I’m particularly interested in your blog because of your costuming work. I’m involved with costumes with San Jose Youth Shakespeare (and other groups my daughters have been involved in.) My tip is for costuming for whole shows. I set up spreadsheets for each play which has really helped us to know who needs what which has helped us communicate better to the families of the actors and actresses. And we are then freed up to be creative in our costuming.

I have spacial organization habits. It can be crazy messy but if something gets moved within the mess, then I’m in trouble.

I have always loved the artwork on your walls. If I ever decided to do a new cutting table, I may have to copy yours. I love the cubbly holes for organizing and how well it utilizes all the space underneath.

Dear Brooke, how nice for you to be in a book. I would love to enter the give-away. We’re looking to move into a bigger house and part of that bigger house would be an entire sewing room just for me, so I sure could use the inspiration AND I can read (and speak) French!
I got to know your blog through the Twitter sewing community and I love all the tips and tricks you talk about and share on here.
I’m very organised about my sewing (to stash my stuff at least) and what I find really useful are these little chests of drawers which you can stack. I also use organisers for screws to organize my buttons by colour and type.

Honestly, I can’t remember how we found one another, but I’m sure glad we did. I love hearing about the trials and triumphs of designing for films and such.

Congrats I would luv to be in the drawing for the book, I follow your blog by email subscription. I probably found your blog via anothers blog by clicking on a linked story from my interest in costuming. Presently I’m looking to turn my spare room into my dream sewing room. I have a lovely sturdy cutting out table, which needs to be made higher, not my idea but I have seen catering coffee tins put under the legs to make table waist high, my clever partner is a welder though so he will somehow extend the metal legs to get the required height. Thank you for the chance.

I found your blog because of the 1912 Sewing Project. My favorite part is your style of writing, it’s friendly and well thought out, okay I admit I like the tips too, but I also like reading about your job.
If only I had an organizational tip, right now my craft room is so bad that I open the door, advert my eyes, toss stuff in, quickly close the door so nothing can escape and walk away. My sewing machine is currently living in the dining room and my mannequin is in a corner of the family room. My tip is don’t let things get this out of control.

Oooh, how exciting is that! I don’t need more books, but I did want to let you know that I just love everything about your blog — the tips, the random stories about anything and everything from Gandalf to your organist at church, and of course all of the parts about what it’s like to be a professional costumer! I found you through the 1912 Project, where I fell in love with your style of explanation.
I don’t have any particular tips for organization, since my sewing room is a bit of a mess right now, but I will say that I save shoeboxes for storing various notions. Since they’re rectangular and stackable, it makes it easy to have a tidy stack for buttons, seam binding, trims, etc. Plus, shoeboxes are cheaper than buying specific containers!

Sewing tip: I use file folders to hold all my patterns. They hold a lot and you can even add notions or fabric bits to them.

I’ve got this book and that’s how I discovered your blog ! This is a very good book ! After Ordering it, I almost regretted because I thought that I was organized enough to make my own sewing room but then I received the book and I don’t regret at all, its full of pictures, very useful advices and tips. Your workspace is one of my favorite, organized, clear, lighted, just love it !
